The man does not think it is a good idea for two reasons.

For example, he attended a fundraising dinner for the basketball team and it collected only a few hundred dollars.
Second, he mentions that it's unlikely that people from outside the university will attend the auction. Since the auction will be solely of student work, it won't have the same draw as an auction of professional artwork.
For these reasons, he believes it is not a great idea.
