Affiliate marketing is basically a way to promote a company by having a different person or company, known as an affiliate, do some of the marketing work. // 개념 정의

His friend provided discount vouchers for gym members, and every time they used them, the gym owner got a small part of the profit.

So, in this case, the professor's friend is the merchant, the gym owner is the affiliate, and the gym members are the potential customers of the clothing store.

The idea worked, because the professor's friend got new customers who would keep coming back to the store.
