Before Europeans arrived, the deer were balanced with the carrying capacity.
They had plenty of food, but their main predator, the wolf, kept their poluation form growing.
After settlers killed off a lot of wolves, the deer population increased and exceeded the carrying capacity of the land.
This caused the deer to eat all the vegetation,and they began to starve.
It took a long time until the balance between the carrying capacity and deer poulation was stabilized again.
